Carlos Corberan has responded after being linked with a move to leave West Brom to potentially replace Gary O’Neil as Wolves manager.
With the Molineux club currently 19th in the Premier League table, there is an expectation that O’Neil will be sacked regardless of the outcome of his side’s clash with West Ham on Monday (9 December).
It has now been claimed that the Old Gold have placed Corberan at the top of their list of targets to replace the former Bournemouth boss [Matteo Moretto].
Such a move would see the Spaniard swap one bitter Black Country rival for the other, and he has now spoken out about those links, but gave little away, preferring to focus on his current side’s next game.
When asked on Friday (6 December) about those links with a move to Wolves ahead of West Brom’s clash with Sheffield United at the weekend, Corberan was quoted by The Express and Star as saying: “I came here just to be focused on giving you answers to questions on the game we are going to play against Sheffield United.
“For me, it’s a very important game and all of my concentration is on this. I just want to give answers related with this topic.
“We are playing one game on Sunday that is very, very important for us. We are preparing well because we know Sheffield United are a team who are competing at a very high level. Right now, they’re the best team in the league, even without the points deduction. All of my concentration and focus is on this.”
Football Insider understands that the former Huddersfield boss has a £2million release clause at The Hawthorns.
Carlos Corberan comments may raise eyebrows at Wolves and West Brom
Football Insider Opinion
It would be a huge shock if Corberan was to depart his role at The Hawthorns in order to replace O’Neil in his role.
The Spaniard has seemed to immerse himself fully in the West Brom culture since arriving at the club, which he is clearly passionate about and where he has built a good relationship with the fans.
To walk away from that and surely destroy his reputation there by joining their biggest rivals, would therefore make very little sense, especially considering Wolves’ struggles.
However, his comments here have only insisted that his focus is on the Baggies’ game this weekend rather than offering any other insight.
Many will therefore feel that Corberan has not completely ruled out a move to Wolves, and has instead left the door open for a potential move to Molineux.
This distraction and speculation cannot completely be put to bed yet then. Some at West Brom may not be too pleased about that given the magnitude of their clash with Sheffield United in the Championship promotion race.
In other news, Wolves are not the only destination Corberan has been linked to leave West Brom for.
