'Changes are Expected' - Chris Jack: Rangers to take action on Ibrox issue which upset Clement

Rangers are expected to make changes to the medical department behind the scenes this summer, according to Chris Jack.

Writing in his Q&A for the Rangers Review website on 17 June the journalist indicated the injury situation at Ibrox last term meant that every person and process at Ibrox should be under review, with action considered likely.

Philippe Clement was vocal about his displeasure with the number of players regularly ruled out soon after taking the Gers job last year and wanted greater use of the club’s cryo-chamber to help address it [Scottish Sun, 31 October], but the situation barely improved throughout the campaign so according to Jack “changes are expected” at the same time as the manager overhauls the squad.

He wrote: “Millions of pounds were wasted on players who were unable to contribute over the course of the campaign and Clement was clearly irked by what he found and what he had to contend with. It has to change.”

Injuries continued to plague Rangers last season

Good quality players such as Ryan Jack and Kemar Roofe have been allowed to leave Ibrox for nothing this summer due to simply not being available regularly enough to justify the investment.

But the sheer scale of injury issues at Rangers stretch far beyond the veteran pair, with new signings over the past couple of seasons regularly unable to feature.

In the campaign before last John Souttar, Ridvan Yilmaz and Tom Lawrence were barely seen, while Danilo, Oscar Cortes and Kieran Dowell followed the same pattern, while Abdallah Sima missed months despite contributing strongly overall.

Clement and his players can’t escape criticism for fighting their way ahead in the title race only to throw away the chance to win a first Scottish Premiership in three years late in the season.

Danilo missed the majority of his debut season at Rangers but was just one of many regularly missing.

But it is fair to wonder whether Celtic might have been deposed if the manager ever had his full compliment available for a sustained period, and key men weren’t knocked out at crucial times.

It is no doubt easier said than done to correct what has become a regular feature under successive managers but whatever can be done to address it must be.

In other Rangers news, another injury-prone first-team ace is now in transfer exit talks.
