Rangers transfer round-up: 1st-teamer in exit talks, Conway move encouraged

Rangers are continuing to stay very active in the transfer market with Philippe Clement and the recruitment staff at Ibrox looking to build a squad capable of toppling Celtic next season.

With Oscar Cortes’ deal extended, Mohamed Diomande’s loan made permanent and Jefte and Clinton Nsiala through the entrance door already, a solid foundation has been laid for forthcoming business.

The only outgoings from Ibrox remain those who were released following the end of the 2023-24 campaign.

Ibrox News has rounded up the latest transfer talk as Rangers look to reassemble their squad.

Rangers have already identified James Tavernier replacement

Dujon Sterling will be given the Rangers right-back role if captain James Tavernier leaves this summer, according to Chris Jack.

The Rangers Review journalist wrote for the outlet’s website on 17 June that fans should “expect to see” the former Chelsea man slot in on the right of the Light Blues backline, as he suggested it would be a “tall order” for homegrown Adam Devine to secure himself even the back-up position at this stage.

Sterling arrived from Stamford Bridge on a free transfer a year ago having primarily been a right-back during loans with Stoke, Blackpool, Wigan and Coventry, but was used in multiple other positions by Philippe Clement, including central midfield, left-back, centre-back and as an attacking winger.

Tavernier has again been linked to Ibrox exit this summer, with two former managers in Steven Gerrard at Al-Ettifaq [Daily Record, 24 April] and Giovanni van Bronckhorst at Besiktas [Sozcu, 9 June] said to be interested in signing him.

Ridvan Yilmaz in Rangers exit talks

Ridvan Yilmaz is in talks with Besiktas over move to link up with his former Rangers boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst, according to Turkiye Gazete.

The Turkish outlet reported on their website on 18 June that with Nantes seen as certain to sign Arthur Masuaku this summer, with a new bid on the way, the Istanbul club will replace him by bringing their former defender back from Ibrox.

Cash generated by selling Masuaku will be used towards a deal to bring in Yilmaz, with new Besiktas boss Van Bronckhorst giving a move for his former player the green light.

Yilmaz, has been repeatedly linked with a return to the Turkish Super Lig since he arrived at Ibrox two years ago as a Van Bronckhorst signing.

His agent has claimed that the 23-year-old isn’t looking to move back to his home country [Gökmen Özcan, 10 June], but it appears to be a possibility anyway.

Rangers told to complete Tommy Conway signing amid Cyriel Dessers and Danilo verdict

Rangers would be getting “something different” to their existing striker options if they sign Bristol City forward Tommy Conway this summer, according to Alan Hutton.

The former Gers right-back was speaking to Football League World (18 June) and said that Conway would provide an outlet running in behind for the Gers, something he feels Cyriel Dessers and Danilo don’t do.

Conway has been heavily touted to make a move this summer, with Philippe Clement’s side reportedly locked in a transfer battle with clubs including Old Firm rivals Celtic to secure his signature (Daily Record, 11 June).

Hutton said of Conway: “I really like what I’ve seen from him so far, what he does is bring something different to Rangers.

“You look at Dessers and Danilo, they want to link up and have their back to goal, whereas Conway interests me because he wants to go in behind.

“They need someone like that, so it would be interesting to see whether they can get it over the line or not.”

Ianis Hagi transfer decision made as Rangers exit on cards in weeks – Chris Jack

Ianis Hagi will definitely leave Rangers in the summer transfer window, according to Chris Jack.

Writing on the Rangers Review website (18 June), the reliable journalist says there is “no doubt” the Romania international will leave Ibrox this summer with movement expected in the coming weeks.

Ridvan Yilmaz may still move on from Rangers this summer

However, the fee he would command is unclear and although it won’t be “transformative”, every pound is expected to be reinvested into the budget for transfers to rebuild the squad.
