Rangers are struggling to find a new chief executive because they appear to be trying to do things on the cheap, says Derek Ferguson.

James Bisgrove “stunned” the Ibrox board by leaving for the Saudi Pro League at the end of last season [Scottish Sun, 30 May] and the role remains unfilled after advanced talks between St Mirren’s vice-chairman Jim Gillespie and former Gers chair John Bennett fell through late [Daily Mail, 10 September].

The latter has now resigned on health grounds and Ferguson believes the entire mess could be a financial issue, which just won’t work for such a key position.

Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News he said: “I think it’s clear to see that Bisgrove went to Saudi Arabia because there’s no money. The one with Gillespie I’m not so sure.

“With a job at Rangers like chief executive you’ve got to pay the big bucks to get the right people in place.

“Maybe they’ve tried to get people in on the cheap. That’s not going to work. If you want the right person that’s experienced, that’s good at their job, who’s going to bring success, you’ve got to pay the big bucks. It’s like that in every business.”

Clearly the Light Blues are going about the CEO search the wrong way if a club of this size and history has now gone four months without one.

Unfortunately it is part of a worrying pattern than has seen the director of football role absent since Ross Wilson left for Nottingham Forest a year and a half ago, and nobody brought in as academy head since Zeb Jacobs went to Feyenoord at the end of last term.

And if a lack of cash is behind Bisgrove’s Saudi exit and the failure to replace him then it is only going to add support to Dave King’s insistence that outside investment is now needed [Rangers Review, 15 September].
