Chelsea don’t need to sign a new striker if Nicolas Jackson keeps performing as well as he has done at the start of this season, according to pundit Troy Deeney.
The Senegal international netted a brace in the Blues’ 3-0 win away to West Ham at the weekend, and fans will no doubt be encouraged that they finally seem to be seeing the best of him.
Still, CaughtOffside understands that, despite Jackson’s improved form, Chelsea continue to look at a number of options to come in up front, including Victor Osimhen, Viktor Gyokeres and Benjamin Sesko.
Deeney, however, believes Chelsea don’t need to keep pursuing a new centre-forward if Jackson can maintain this kind of form.
Speaking to BBC Sport for his latest team of the week column, Deeney named Jackson in his line up and singled the 23-year-old out for big praise.
He said: “This weekend is all about Jackson. Two great goals and an assist, all done before he was given a rest after 60 minutes. It was a fine day at the office for him.
“I’m quite critical of how many chances he misses for Chelsea and, if he wants to be the main man moving forward, he has to have more games like this. He grabbed hold of it, offered a threat in behind and scored goals.
“Chelsea don’t need to buy another striker if he stays in this kind of form.”
Do Chelsea still need a new striker?
Chelsea have been big spenders under their current owners, often targeting some of the finest young players in world football.
Jackson is arguably one of those, even if he initially took some time to get going at Stamford Bridge, so it surely now makes sense for the west London giants to stick with him and allow him to continue his development.
While it might be tempting to opt for a big name like Osimhen or Gyokeres, there’s no guarantee they’d make the step up that would be expected of them, while there would also inevitably be something of a settling-in period in the Premier League anyway.
