Southampton coach Russell Martin has allayed fears that Super Eagles striker Paul Onuachu suffered a serious injury, despite his forced exit from their 3-2 loss to Liverpool on Sunday, Soccernet.ng reports.
Onuachu got his first Premier League start of the season when Southampton welcomed Liverpool to the St. Mary’s on Sunday.
The Nigerian striker proved his worth, as he put up an impressive performance. In the first half, he had more dribbles than the entire Liverpool team. Onuachu also put in work in the defence, as Southampton were constantly under pressure from Liverpool.
Unfortunately for him, he had to be subbed off in the 58th minute of the game after he seemed to have sustained an injury following a bad tackle from Darwin Nunez.
Onuachu went down clutching his knee, causing fears that he had sustained an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury.
However, after the game, Southampton boss Russell Martin asserted that Onuachu may not have been injured but was suffering from fatigue instead.
“Paul probably deserved to start before now, the way he’s trained – he’s been so good. He was really good so I hope his injury is nothing too serious. It’s just a bit of fatigue but I thought he played really, really well,” Martin said.
Onuachu’s performance against Liverpool on Sunday will surely give Martin something to think about. After that performance, the Super Eagles star could just see his minutes increase significantly.
