Chelsea Sources: Big Osimhen update tonight

Chelsea are considering a move to sign Napoli striker Victor Osimhen in January thanks to a break clause in his loan deal with Galatasaray, sources have told Football Insider.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed that Osimhen’s price tag is expected to drop in January as he will have just 18 months left on his deal in Italy.

Sources say Napoli will be “desperate” to receive a decent fee for the striker rather than see him leave for free, with his asking price dropping as his contract continues to tick down.

While he is currently on loan at Galatasaray, Napoli are said to have inserted a break clause in the deal which would allow them to recall Osimhen and send him elsewhere.

The Blues are closely monitoring his situation after missing out in the summer, and could be tempted to make a move in January if they feel a striker is still a priority.

However, they are expected to be joined in their pursuit by a number of elite clubs across Europe and the Middle East when his price tag lowers.

Chelsea were exploring the market for a new number nine throughout the summer window to add a focal point to Enzo Maresca’s team, with Osimhen a prime target.

However, Napoli’s lofty asking price meant the possibility of a deal only emerged late in the window, and the Blues were unable to agree terms.

After being told he would not feature in Antonio Conte’s plans for the upcoming season as he was left out of their squad, the Nigerian moved to Galatasaray on loan.

However, there is an expectation at Stamford Bridge that the loan move will not scupper the potential for a permanent deal with Napoli in January.

Osimhen scored 17 goals in 32 appearances for the Serie A club last season as they finished a disappointing tenth place in the league.

However, it was his 31 goals in 39 appearances in the 2022-23 season which sparked initial interest from elsewhere, and the striker was expected to finally make a step up in the summer.

The Blues, however, already have an over-inflated squad, with many top players expelled from training and frozen out of Enzo Maresca’s squad.

There have been suggestions that they will need to cash in on some of the fringe players in January before they can add further signings to their side.

Sources also say the ongoing ownership situation at Stamford Bridge will need to be resolved before the club can have any real direction in the transfer market.
