Chris Jack issues £12.6m transfer claim as Rangers linked with new attacker

Rangers will not be spending £12.6million to sign a new winger before the transfer deadline, according to Chris Jack.

The Rangers Review journalist addressed the rumours of FC Porto winger Goncalo Borges moving to Ibrox this summer. [Scottish Sun, 29 July]

Record reported on 29 July that Gers would have to shell out an eight-figure fee in order to sign the 23-year-old Portuguese wide man.

Jack said on 29 July at 34:29: “Rangers are not spending €15million on a winger. There are many issues within the squad. Centre-back, centre mid and centre forward are just some of them.

“I would be amazed if Rangers are going to spend that type of money on a winger. I don’t think we’ll be speaking of this young man again, put it that way.”

Rangers may have £12.6million to spend on four or five different players

The £12.6million fee for Borges was always a long shot for the Ibrox outfit.

The club have multiple areas in need of reinforcement and spending such a significant amount on a single winger would have been financially imprudent, especially when it could potentially address multiple squad needs.

Jack’s scepticism is well-founded, as Rangers are unlikely to allocate such a large portion of their transfer budget to a single position.

The club will likely prioritise strengthening their squad in areas of greater need, using the available funds to bring in several players rather than one high-profile signing.

This approach would be more beneficial in terms of squad depth and balance, making the Borges deal an unlikely proposition.

Thus far, Gers have mainly signed backup players and ones for the future but it’s about time they bring in players to strengthen the first team.

In other Rangers news, a £3million development has emerged as Gers want to secure the services of Lawrence Shankland.
