Rangers manager Philippe Clement still has issues to address up front and in central midfield this summer, according to Keith Jackson.
Writing for the Daily Record’s jury (22 July), Jackson said that Clement still doesn’t have a “fully functioning” centre-forward at his disposal and didn’t hold back on his criticism of Cyriel Dessers.
Furthermore, the journalist added that following the losses of two senior figureheads in midfield, the Gers need to fill the gap left by signing a player, or players, with both the quality and exprience to match.
On the Clement’s most pressing transfer requirements, Jackson wrote: “He needs a fully functioning number nine – Cyriel Dessers doesn’t lack effort but continues to look like a competition winner.
“Rangers also need to add quality and experience in the centre of midfield having lost Ryan Jack and John Lundstram.”
Rangers running out of time to make strides in transfer market
Summer transfer business at Ibrox began hastily, with a first new arrival in the form of Jefte coming through the doors before the 2023/24 season had even finished.
Jefte’s arrived in the shadows of the Scottish Cup final paved the way for four more signings in June alone, but since the most recent transfer, Hamza Igamane on 5 July, the Gers’ progress has slowed.
It’s the longest period of the summer so far in which Clement’s side have failed to get any deals over the line, and with five of their six signings being 21 or under, there’s still a lot of work still to be done.
Connor Barron on a free transfer from Aberdeen may be a shrewd pick-up, but he cannot make up for the losses of Lundstram and Jack on his own, with links to Kenny McLean yet to make any real progress [Daily Record, 15 July].
Likewise in attack, the Gers’ continued reliance on Dessers and Danilo up front – with only Igamane joining them so far – shows that despite the clear need to strengthen his side in several areas this summer, Clement hasn’t yet been able to secure a landmark signing.
