Rangers don’t look like they are going to get the money they would like for Ianis Hagi as he heads for an exit, says Derek Ferguson.
According to Rangers Review’s Chris Jack on 27 June the Ibrox winger is not expected to have a future in Glasgow under Philippe Clement so a move away is seemingly on the cards.
But his agent Giovani Becali has indicated the size of Hagi’s Gers contract makes finding a buyer difficult [Football Scotland, 27 June], and has also claimed he and his brother are ready to pay out of their own pocket to help the 25-year-old a move [Digi Sport, 6 July].
Ferguson therefore hopes the agent is good at his job as he believes the Romanian was “excellent” at Euro 2024 with his national team, but isn’t hopeful that the Light Blues are going to land a much-needed windfall as a result.
Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News he said: “Again there’s another player where obviously his agent is making contact to get him fixed up with a club.
“He was excellent with Romania over there but again, he’s had his time at Rangers.
“It’s not quite worked out and I just think for everybody it would be best if he goes further afield.
“Again, it comes down to finances. Are we going to get the money for Hagi? It doesn’t look like it.
“We’ve been mismanaged for the last season or two. I know Hagi was there before and he’s come back from a tough injury, I get that.
“He’s a talented boy but I don’t think our style of football up in Scotland suits him so I just hope he’s got a good agent that could get him fixed up [with a move].”
Ianis Hagi in same boat as Sam Lammers at Rangers
Hagi has never played for Philippe Clement as he was on loan at Alaves last season when the Belgian replaced Michael Beale.
But the attacker has already indicated he would like to leave after he told MARCA on 21 March he hoped to stay in La Liga so a return to prominence at Ibrox under a new manager seems unlikely.
However, he is not the only player who seems destined to depart this summer whose Rangers contract is hampering efforts to facilitate the move.
Sam Lammers is clearly unwanted in Glasgow after his move last summer proved a major flop but his excellent loan with FC Utrecht has failed to secure a permanent Eredivisie exit despite multiple clubs holding an interest [Rangers Review, 29 May] since he, perhaps understandably, doesn’t want to take a massive pay cut.
So in both cases the agents are going to need to be working overtime to find a solution otherwise loans that kick the can down the road may be the only alternative and the club will ultimately end up losing out on valuable transfer revenue.
In other Rangers news, another Ibrox ace is expected to seal a move away from the club within days.
