Rangers have made a “big mistake” to agree a permanent deal for Oscar Cortes in light of his injury record, according to Derek Ferguson.

The 20-year-old rejoined the Light Blues in the summer on loan with an obligation to buy for a fee believed to be around £4million [Daily Record print edition, 4 June, p.45], but have barely seen him in action thanks to repeated fitness problems.

Philippe Clement and Nils Koppen decided to bring him back to Ibrox after injury had previously cut short his initial loan spell last season after just seven appearances, ending his campaign in February.

Since his original arrival last term Cortes has now been hit by three lengthy lay-offs, and Ferguson is worried that it is a pattern that will keep repeating itself even as the club part with millions at the end of the campaign.

Rangers have been blighted by similar problems with multiple players, as the likes of Ridvan Yilmaz, Danilo and Tom Lawrence are just some of the signings in recent years who have picked up injury after injury.

Ryan Jack and Kemar Roofe were let go in the summer as their contracts expired as their lack of availability made it impossible to invest in extensions, and Ferguson can’t believe the Gers signed up for the same situation with Cortes anyway.

Rangers manager Philippe Clement brought Oscar Cortes back despite injury during his initial loan.

He exclusively told Ibrox News: “It’s another big mistake from the club. They shouldn’t have agreed to that, it’s as simple as that.

“With Cortes he hadnae really proved himself. We’ve seen him in flashes. In flashes he looked good, but you’ve got to do it over a period of time and you’ve got to sustain a certain degree of fitness.

“And he’s not done that, so for us to forking out £4million-plus, a real worry so it is.

“It’s another crazy decision.”

In other Rangers news, an increasingly-successful manager who keeps being linked to the Ibrox job has been backed to be a hit after his next move.
