Keith Jackson believes Rangers promoting Nils Koppen to the role of technical director at Ibrox was a “crazy” thing for them to do.
The Gers have had a poor season thus far with the club currently sitting third in the Scottish Premiership.
Several behind-the-scenes departures have also occurred at Ibrox this term but Jackson believes it still was a surprise to see Koppen get promoted.
Speaking on the Daily Record’s Hotline Live (20 November), journalist Jackson shared his thoughts on what this means for the future of the team.
“It seems crazy,” he said. “Basically with Nils Koppen he [should have] one job, he’s now got I don’t know how many jobs.
“Nils Koppen had one job and he’s not been very good at that, and now you’re going to give him the keys to the whole castle, it’s madness.
“This is sort of a repeat cycle at Rangers where astonishingly every time they go and try to fill a new position, they only later discover that they had best-in-class candidates, it’s extraordinary”.
Why Nils Koppen shouldn’t have been anywhere near the technical director role at Rangers
As aforementioned, the Gers are massively underperforming this term and that’s largely due to their below-par recruitment in the summer.
While many new faces were brought through the Ibrox doors and some such as Vaclav Cerny have had a positive impact on the team, the vast majority of signings have failed to live up to expectations.
It was always going to be a risk for Koppen and Philippe Clement to replace their veterans with younger talent and unfortunately, things haven’t quite worked out.
The Dutchman already had a fairly senior role within the club as their sporting director but the fact that Gilligan believes Koppen showed enough to earn a promotion, outlines how low his expectations must be.
If it wasn’t for the wishy-washy recruitment over the summer that left Rangers with a disjointed squad, the questions about the future of Clement may not have even been brought into conversation.
Instead, they’re sitting third in the league and have a long way to go in order to close the gap at the top of the table.
In other Rangers news, Philippe Clement’s job could now be safe thanks to Nils Koppens’ promotion.
