Crystal Palace reveal Marc Guehi talks as Newcastle lodge fourth bid for England defender
Talks have occured.
Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner revealed he has held talks with Marc Guehi as Newcastle United ramped up their efforts with a fourth bid for the England centre-back.
After an impressive showing at Euro 2024, Guehi has attracted plenty of interest from rival Premier League clubs.
None more so than Newcastle who have now reportedly lodged a fourth bid worth up to £65 million for the 24-year-old.
Palace, though, have stood firm on their valuation – believed to be more than £70m – with manager Glasner insisting he had held talks with Guehi and expects the centre-back to start on the weekend against Brentford.
‘Marc trained today and we talked together,’ the Austrian said when asked about the latest bid for his centre-back.
‘I will have to look at my bank account if something came in! But it doesn’t look like it so we have to plan with Marc.
‘He is our player and our captain and I can’t tell you anything else.’
Guehi is not the only Palace defender in demand from other rival clubs, with Fulham seeing a bid for Joachim Andersen rejected in recent days.
‘There were many rumours about players,’ Glasner said.
‘You asked me about availability – all players are available. I’m very close with all the players – we are talking almost every day.
‘As long as nobody tells me: “Gaffer, I will leave.” Or if the club tells me a player will leave, we work with them every day and prepare the team to be competitive for a Premier League game.’
Speaking earlier in the day, Newcastle manager Eddie Howe said the club will have to decide if it is worth continuing to bid for the player, insisting they won’t pay ‘silly fees’ for players.
‘If you believe in the deal, believe in the player and it’s still within your financial structure, then yes, 100 per cent, you keep working on it,’ he said.
‘But there are also times where we have to go, ‘Okay, that’s too much’, and we’ve done that plenty of times in the last two-and-a-half years.
People might not have found out about that, but we’ve had to switch targets. It depends on the deal and the amount of money that you’re going to spend.’
