'Cut in wages' - Philippe Clement issues 'Better Period' admission ahead of Rangers v Motherwell

Rangers take on Motherwell in the Scottish League Cup semi-final clash on Sunday and Philippe Clement has issued an update on his situation.

The Belgian admits that there was a big upheaval in the summer with a cut in wages and younger players coming in.

He also admits, ahead of the game at Hampden Park on 3 November, that this is the start of a better period.

He said, as quoted by the club’s official X handle: “I am very confident in this longer-term story. It is about small margins and making it better.

“Last season, we turned things around in a short time, and I am convinced we can do the same. Of course, we wanted the result on Wednesday but I saw a team that tried until the last minute. They don’t give up and we will continue fighting to get more consistent football like we have seen against Malmo and FCSB.

“There had to be a major turnaround in the summer, getting younger players and a cut in wages. The club knows it is the start of a better period, we don’t see it in results now, but the foundations are being grown for a more healthy club in the future.”

Philippe Clement may be managing his last Rangers game

Clement’s position at Ibrox has become precarious, underscored by the team’s recent performances and the growing discontent among fans.

As Gers prepare to face Motherwell in the Premier Sports Cup semi-final, anything less than a victory could potentially mark the end of Clement’s tenure.

The club’s fans, who have grown weary of the team’s inconsistent play and lacklustre results, are demanding a turnaround.

With Gers trailing significantly behind in the league and having announced a substantial financial loss, the pressure on Clement has intensified.

A loss against Motherwell, a team enjoying a confident season, might be seen as an unacceptable underperformance, especially given Gers’ historical expectations.

If that happens, it won’t come as a surprise to many that the club have decided to part ways with their manager.

In other Rangers news, an update has emerged on a league-winning manager to take over at Ibrox if Philippe Clement departs.
