Cyriel Dessers believes the Europa League tie against Lyon will be a “good test” for Rangers.
The Ibrox outfit are coming off the back of a great result against Malmo on 26 September as they left Sweden with a 2-0 victory.
Their most recent clash against Hibernian was rather unconvincing but they still managed to come away from Ibrox with all three points after a 1-0 win.
Philippe Clement will be hoping that the Gers can carry on their winning streak against the Ligue 1 side and add another three points to their tally.
Speaking to the Daily Record (1 October), Dessers made a comparison to the Old Firm when talking about the Gers’ Europa League games.
“You analyse the game, you see what we did wrong, you see what we did well. You try to learn from it, you train on it again,” he said.
“The league is a little bit different because a lot of teams play in a different way against us, but like in these European games, I think these are more similar to the Old Firm games.
“You can see that we made a step already since the end of August and we have to keep growing. Lyon will be a good test for us”.
Rangers need Cyriel Dessers to perform
Rangers have been in the shadow of their arch-rivals Celtic for some time now and although they currently reside in third place domestically, their European performance against Malmo showed what the team are truly capable of.
One area of their squad that has performed fairly well this term is that of their number nine.
Dessers has scored a fair few goals already and although his misses can frustrate fans, the fact that Alan Hutton believed that Hamza Igamane was “all over the place” against Hibs shows that the Nigerian international is still the number one at the club.
It feels as if no matter what Clement tries to change in terms of his focal point, nobody other than the 29-year-old can get the results desired.
If Rangers and Dessers can play as well as they did against Malmo, they could take all three points and put themselves in a commanding position in Europe yet again.
Keith Jackson has mooted a “serious problem” if they perform as they did against Hibs, but it is down to the players to make that right on the biggest stage.
