Daily Record journo says 'Mega-millions' may be 'Irresistable' for Rangers star exit

Rangers captain James Tavernier may not be able to resist the pay packet on offer if he moves to Saudi Arabia this summer, according to Graeme Young.

Writing in the Daily Record‘s print edition (1 July, page 45), Young said that while Tavernier could still have a role to play at Ibrox, he’ll find it hard to turn down the “mega-millions” that would come with a Saudi offer.

Tavernier still made 58 appearances in all competitions for the Gers last season, scoring 24 goals, but as Philippe Clement leads a squad rebuild this summer, he has been tipped for an exit.

“If he stays, he will play,” he wrote.

“But James Tavernier potentially earning a shot at Saudi mega-millions could prove irresistable.”

Rangers rebuild could be aided by James Tavernier transfer

It’s still clear that despite being beyond the wrong side of 30 now, Tavernier still has a massive influence on the way this squad plays, and that’s been the case under a series of different managers.

However, with Clement having received the backing to begin a huge player overhaul in this transfer window, it’s arguable that no player should be safe from the clean sweep he is looking to achieve [Keith Jackson, 27 May].

There’s another argument to say that with so much change going on at the club this summer, both on and potentially off the field, Tavernier staying put would maintain a sense of continuity within the squad.

Despite this, one of the key themes of Clement’s rebuild is to move on the ageing stars and bring in a new crop of youngsters to build his team around, potentially leaving Tavernier caught in limbo.

His extraordinary service in Glasgow has seen trophies lifted and records tumble simultaneously, but given the choice of Saudi “mega-millions” or being a casualty of Clement’s new era [Rory Loy, 15 May], Tavernier ending his nine-year spell at Ibrox seems a fairly straightforward one.

In other Rangers news, Clement has been told the Gers’ transfer priority this summer following the signing of Liam Kelly.
