Dan Bardell has urged Rangers to sign Cheikh Niasse ahead of more experienced options like Kenny McLean.
Italian journalist Gianluigi Longari reported on 13 July that the Gers have made an enquiry to sign the 24-year-old defensive midfielder from Swiss side BSC Young Boys.
The Light Blues have expressed their interest in the Senegalese while also being linked to McLean from Norwich City [Daily Record, 24 June].
Sky Sports and talkSPORT journalist Bardell believes Rangers should look to sign players like Niasse ahead of older players.
Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, Bardell said: “Sometimes players from teams and leagues like Young Boys come in well equipped.
“They do play in Europe every season which provides them with good experience against high-quality opposition.
“You could argue that signing older and more experienced players, like Kenny McLean, is better but that isn’t always the case.
“Someone like Niasse is worth the risk because he’ll bring a decent amount of pedigree but might not cost so much. He’ll develop better than someone older so there’s probably more upsides than downsides.“
Rangers urged to sign Cheikh Niasse
The 24-year-old has featured regularly for Young Boys ever since joining from Lille in 2022.
This has seen him feature across all three UEFA competitions with six appearances coming in the Champions League last season [FotMob].
With the Gers looking to achieve European qualification for the upcoming season, Niasse could prove to be a positive addition.
McLean would bring experience in the EFL and Premier League but has a general lack of experience on the continent.
It is unclear as to how much the Senegalese midfielder could cost but he could prove to be another shrewd signing for Philippe Clement.
