Rangers and Philippe Clement will be on red alert after a new update emerged around the future of Tommy Conway at Bristol City.
The Light Blues are eager to add to their attacking ranks before the Premiership season gets underway but are understood to need to clear some space off of the wage bill before they can make any more signings. From the Bristol City first team.
One striker who has repeatedly been linked with a move to Glasgow in the past is Scotland international Conway, with reports suggesting the Gers would be interested in securing his signature [Bristol Live, 11 June].
While a fee will still be required to get him out of Ashton Gate this summer, Bristol City head coach Liam Manning has revealed that the striker has rejected a contract offer and has been “exiled” to the U21s. [Bristol Live, 18 July]
As quoted by Bristol Live on Thursday (18 July) Manning said: “Tommy has had a contract offer on the table, which is an excellent offer.
“This has been turned down, and not negotiated with the player expressing a desire to leave.
“The decision has been made for him to train with the U21s, with the focus wholly on players who are fully committed to what we are trying to achieve.”
Will Tommy Conway exit Bristol City amid Rangers transfer speculation?
Whether or not this latest update from south of the border will change how the Gers approach a potential move for Conway remains to be seen, but almost certainly will have perked the interest of Rangers.
The 21-year-old clearly wants out of Ashton Gate and that would almost certainly mean that agreeing personal terms with the Scotland international wouldn’t be an issue for Clement’s side.
However, a transfer fee will still have to be agreed with the Robins for a deal to be completed.
He may not have a future under Manning, but he is still an asset to the club and therefore he won’t be sold on the cheap.
The Light Blues could look to sign him as a free agent next term and therefore only pay a compensation fee, but they run the risk of another club swooping in and securing his services first.
Whatever approach Rangers decide to take, they now at least know that Conway is definitely looking to take the next step in his career.
