Rangers midfielder Connor Barron being called up to the Scotland squad this week is an unbelievable opportunity for him, according to Scot Gemmill.

The Scotland under-21s head coach, speaking to PA Sport on 4 September about Barron and Josh Doig’s debut call-ups, has stated that it’s extremely important for them to take their chances and establish themselves as regulars in the senior set-up.

Barron moved to Ibrox on a free transfer this summer after his contract at Aberdeen expired in June.

“It’s definitely positive,” the under-21s head coach, a former Nottingham Forest midfielder and Scotland international, said of Barron and Doig’s call-ups. “That’s why this team exists, to develop young players. It’s brilliant for the players and I view it that it shows the players have been doing well, not only for us but at their clubs as well. I definitely see it as a positive.

“We’re all football people and we know how it works. Young players get their opportunity whether it’s through a first-team player being injured, suspended or ill, and then it’s up to them to take the opportunity.

“It’s an unbelievable opportunity for them to be involved, and now they have to go and confirm their talent. We think they’ve got great potential and now they have to go and take their opportunity if they get it.”

Rangers would also benefit from Connor Barron representing Scotland

Barron’s call-up to the Scotland squad represents a pivotal moment in his career, offering invaluable international exposure that can significantly enhance his development.

This experience will not only boost his confidence but also expose him to a higher level of competition and tactical acumen, which are crucial for his growth as a midfielder.

Playing alongside and against seasoned international players will refine his skills, decision-making, and physicality, all of which are essential for success in the competitive Scottish Premiership.

For Rangers, this development means the 22-year-old returns with a broader perspective and potentially improved performances, directly benefiting the team’s midfield dynamics.

Moreover, the pressure to perform on the international stage might spur Barron to hit the ground running at Ibrox, aiming to secure a regular first-team spot.

His ambition to cement his place in both club and country will likely drive him to adapt quickly, integrate his international learnings into his club play and strive for consistency, ultimately contributing to Gers’ ambitions in domestic and European competitions.
