Finance Expert: Manager would need to accept significant pay cut to take charge at Rangers if needed

Steven Gerrard would have to accept a significant pay cut to rejoin Rangers if Philippe Clement is sacked, Dan Plumley has said.

Keith Jackson recently suggested that Dave King would be one person likely to want his return to Ibrox, however unlikely it may seem [Record Hotline, 11 November].

Plumley, a football finance expert, admitted that the Al-Ettifaq head coach is likely on inflated wages in Saudi Arabia, but that isn’t the end game for Gerrard at this stage.

“Yes ultimately,” he exclusively told Ibrox News.

“We know how that market has been working over the past couple of years, we know the fees have been inflated above the average of what we’d expect.

“Certainly, in terms of Scottish football finances as well, if Gerrard were to come back, he would have to take a fairly hefty pay cut, but again, it’s not necessarily all about the finance with him.

“He had huge success at Rangers in a very limited amount of time and was well-received, so it’s an interesting one in terms of where he is at.

“All ends up, it’s safe to say he would have to accept a fairly significant pay cut to come back.”

Michael Gannon recently revealed that Gerrard’s name kept popping up among Rangers fans when discussing possible replacements for Clement.

With the Bears currently nine points behind Aberdeen and Celtic in the Scottish Premiership, failure to cut that gap and beat the Hoops in the final of the Premier Sports Cup next month could spell the end for the Belgian.

In other Rangers news, a key first-team player is unlikely to be at Ibrox next season after a recent revelation.
