Everton manager Sean Dyche is still on the lookout for one or two more signings ahead of August’s transfer deadline.
While the Blues have already made excellent additions all over the pitch, there remains a desire among supporters that further depth could be added in the wide areas before the Premier League gets back underway.
One name who is thought to be of interest to the Toffees is Watford attacker Yaser Asprilla, with reports suggesting Dyche’s side are keen to bring the 20-year-old to Goodison Park [Sunday People, 7 July, page 57].
Whether or not Everton have made a genuine push to beat the competition to his signature isn’t clear, but a new update surrounding his future will have put Kevin Thelwell and his recruitment team on red alert.
Will Yaser Asprilla exit Watford amid Everton transfer rumours?
According to The Athletic (4 August) Rennes have had a £25million offer accepted by the Hornets for the winger, however, personal terms are yet to be agreed upon to complete the switch.
Several clubs are known to be tracking the Colombia winger this summer and while it seems as though he will be heading to France, until he signs his contract with Rennes the race remains open.
Time is running out for the Toffees to swoop in and secure this deal from under the French club’s nose and Thelwell and the recruitment team simply have to act now if they want to try and win the race for his signature.
Whether Everton have the financial muscle to match or even better Rennes’ offer isn’t clear, but the opportunity to play regularly in the Premier League would surely give them the edge when it comes to personal terms.
With Wilfried Gnonto now appearing set to stay at Leeds United [Yorkshire Evening Post, 27 July] and no other clear targets on the Blues’ agenda, it would be a blow if the Toffees missed out on Asprilla as well.
If the Blues don’t make a late push to sign the 20-year-old, hopefully, Dyche and the team around him at Goodison will quickly turn their attention to alternative targets as their options are limited outwide at this stage.
In other Everton news, the Toffees may be handed some takeover clarity in the coming days after an update from Alan Myers
