Rangers had to shelve all their plans for the G51 bar opening in the wake of the Ibrox building work mess, according to 4 Lads Had A Dream.

The Gers outlet responded via X to a question from a fan about the delayed opening of the venue which was announced as due for “early 2024” last summer.

But despite having the relevant documentation secured the club have yet to provide news on resumed progress, having had to push everything back to focus on completing the Copland Road stand works.

Delayed shipments of steel from China emerged during the summer and forced Philippe Clement’s side to play home games for the first two months of the season at Hampden Park.

4 Lads wrote: “Everything was shelved to fix the Copland, there has been no official update since club confirmed they had all necessary licences”.

Rangers G51 plans set back by Copland Road stand mess

The delayed opening of a sports bar is a small price to pay compared to the team and all the fans being decamped to the national stadium for weeks to open the season but is another sign of how badly the Copland Road debacle affected the club.

The Light Blues are now finally back at Ibrox since the 3-0 win over Dundee on 21 September so logically, with the works on the stand now complete since prior to the 1-0 victory over Hibs the following weekend, attention should soon be returning to anything that was put on the back-burner.

It is probably no surprise that the governance at Rangers been lacking in recent months with John Bennett forced to stretch himself across both the chairman and chief executive roles through the summer after James Bisgrove suddenly departed to Saudi Arabia.

Rangers shelved off-pitch plans after the Copland Road stand issue emerged.

Bennett has since been forced to resign on health grounds and John Gilligan is now in his place temporarily, but there is still no CEO, not to mention no sporting director or head of academy, and director of football operations Creag Robertson has also now resigned [Scottish Sun, 8 October].

Until a fully-functioning set up is back in place to govern the club then there could be the risk of further mishaps, but given how long it has taken with key roles left empty already it doesn’t look like the absences will be solved imminently.

In other Rangers news, Clement could have caused major anger to come with what he has said.
