Danny Murphy has blasted Neal Maupay after the 28-year-old forward hit back at Everton supporters on social media.
Following the Toffees’ 4-0 defeat at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday (24 August), footage emerged of the club’s supporters shouting abuse at players as they boarded a train back to Liverpool (via The 44 on X, 25 August).
Maupay responded to those supporters, taking to his personal X account on Sunday (25 August), writing, “Imagine another job where it’s normalised to get abuse like this. Hanging around at a train station to scream at men who are trying their best…”
And while speaking live on talkSPORT (26 August), Murphy has blasted Maupay for his response.
The ex-Liverpool midfielder said, “He (Maupay) is getting paid whatever he is getting paid for sitting on the bench and doing nothing.
“So, he doesn’t have to take that because he hasn’t played, you could argue. But the reality is his performances since he has been there have been poor. So take it on the chin and play better.
“Stop posting on social media trying to stitch up a couple of fans who are fuming because their passion overrides them. They’ve had a few pints, spent a fortune and they’re having a pop at the players. Take it on the chin and do better.”
Neal Maupay hits back at Everton supporters after defeat against Tottenham
This is a messy situation which can be argued in two different ways. On the one hand, it could be suggested that there is no need for supporters to get up close and personal with players and hurl abuse in their direction.
Ultimately, that isn’t going to do anyone any good and won’t help the situation. Everton are one of the Premier League’s poorer teams, and they were beaten by one of the Premier League’s better teams, it happens.
However, that is not to say that supporters aren’t justified in being angry. Furthermore, Maupay’s complaints feel a little rich coming from a player in his position.
He has hardly set the world alight since moving to Goodison Park and there are also people in jobs who are paid far less than him and receive similar levels of abuse.
Therefore, Murphy is right to suggest that perhaps Muapay should do his talking on the pitch rather than on social media, and try and prove those critics wrong.
