Darren Bent has given his verdict on Everton boss Sean Dyche after his side collapsed in the 3-2 loss to Bournemouth on Saturday [31 August].
The Blues had a two-goal lead heading into the final 10 minutes at Goodison Park before goals from Anthony Semenyo, Lewis Cook and Luis Sinisterra secured a third consecutive Premier League loss for Dyche.
Bent offered his take on the defeat live on talkSPORT [3 September, 4:14pm] and believes Everton were unlucky with the result.
He said: “They were unfortunate at the weekend.”
Co-host Andy Goldstein then quizzed the former Premier League forward on whether managers, namely Dyche, should be afforded a certain amount of time before being sacked.
Bent said: “With Sean Dyche it’s a tough one. He’s almost picking up previous managers’ mistakes and trying to work with it.
“But with that squad Everton have, they’re a lot better than what their results suggest.”
Sean Dyche can turn things around at Everton
For the 86 minutes before Semenyo’s goal, Everton were exceptional at Goodison Park and looked revitalised after two Premier League defeats in which they failed to find the back of the net.
Iliman Ndiaye was a standout performer in his full Premier League debut for the Blues and the decision to remove him from the pitch despite the two-goal lead proved to be a deciding factor.
Dyche has been under immense pressure since the result, with many believing he is not the right fit for the Toffees [BBC Radio 5 Live]. He is currently the bookies’ favourite alongside Erik ten Hag to be the first manager sacked this season.
There are encouraging signs to take from the defeat, as pointed out by Micah Richards]. The Everton side proved they are capable of scoring goals and producing a dominant performance but how they lost the match against Bournemouth needs to be studied by Dyche over the international break.
It is time for the Blues boss to adopt the gung-ho approach and find a way to integrate his summer signings into the starting lineup against Aston Villa on 14 September.
The current crop has been afforded more than enough time to stake their claim but it is apparent that change is needed if Everton are to build on their impressive performance and get results in the league.
