Sean Dyche will still be concerned by his right-back options as Everton continue to battle through a tough start to the 2024/25 Premier League campaign.
Ashley Young, 39, who was sent off against Brighton on the opening day, Seamus Coleman, 35, and injury-struck Nathan Patterson are the current options in the squad.
The Toffees were well aware of this during the summer transfer market, targeting several options to make an impact at Goodison Park, though no deal came to fruition before the window slammed shut.
However, Dyche and Kevin Thelwell may have just been handed a second chance at solving the problem with Newcastle United star Kieran Trippier.
The Magpies are currently in talks with the newly-retired England international over terminating his contract, according to Caught Offside, with clubs all over Europe and Saudi Arabia watching.
Everton to sign Kieran Trippier on a free transfer?
The Toffees’ interest in the 33-year-old was well documented in the final few days of the window, with Dyche’s side wanting a loan move for the defender [David Ornstein].
While the addition of Trippier would not help lower the average age of Everton’s backline, he would provide some much-needed experience to a defence that has leaked goals this season.
He has accumulated nearly 200 Premier League appearances across spells with Burnley, Tottenham and Newcastle, also winning 54 caps for England before hanging up his international boots.
Young is clearly not up to the right level anymore, Coleman is extremely hardworking but injury-prone, while Patterson does not look like returning any time soon. Trippier on a free transfer would be a fantastic addition.
Of course, with several other clubs now keeping tabs on his situation at St James’ Park, and a high-level player possibly being available on a free transfer, it will not be easy for the Toffees to grab his signature.
