Darren Bent has tipped Sean Dyche to remain Everton manager if his side are relegated from the Premier League this season.
The Blues sit at the foot of the league table heading into the international break after the 3-2 loss to Bournemouth marked three consecutive losses at the start of the season.
Bent was tasked with predicting the three relegated sides live on talkSPORT [3 September, 5:40pm] and named Everton among his sides to be relegated.
He said: “The bottom three is hard, but I’ll go with Southampton, Leicester and Everton.”
Co-host Andy Goldstein then quizzed Bent whether Dyche would remain in the Goodison Park dugout in the Championship.
Bent said: “Yeah. The only reason I say [Everton will go down] is the lack of form of some of their players, and the injuries they get… The way they capitulated against Bournemouth is a worry.”
Everton tipped to be relegated this season
Everton supporters are resigned to the fact that it will be a long and gruelling Premier League season for the Toffees with relegation a real possibility – even if some don’t want to admit it.
Dyche has been here before. His side embarked on a winless run stretching to the end of September last season, and the 53-year-old steadied the ship ahead of a fifteenth-place finish, 14 points clear of safety – even accounting for the points deductions.
Southampton have also failed to register a point this season whereas fellow promoted sides Ipswich Town and Leicester City have a point each. Wolverhampton Wanderers are also in the relegation places with Crystal Palace lingering after one point in three matches.
On paper, Everton have a stronger squad than the newly-promoted sides and even some of the lower echelon of Premier League sides. The problem for Dyche is figuring out how to get his players to perform to their ability on the pitch.
The Toffees have endured a tough start in the league with matches against Brighton & Hove Albion and Tottenham. Losing those matches was no massive surprise but Bournemouth at Goodison Park should be three points every day of the week.
If Everton continue on this downward trajectory, it will be hard to argue a case for Dyche to remain at Goodison Park. It would be an even bigger stretch to imagine the boss in the Blues dugout should they find themselves in the second-tier next season.
