'Broken' - Journalist: 'Do Not Be Surprised' if Everton sack Dyche before next game

Sean Dyche could become the first Premier League managerial casualty of the season at Everton during the international break, according to Jonathan Johnson,

The CBS journalist wrote for the outlet’s website on 2 September that amid speculation over his job before the season kicked off and his players already looking “broken” after three league defeats on the bounce the Toffees boss could be removed already.

Everton were heavily beaten by Brighton and Tottenham to start the season before Dyche angered fans and pundits with his comments after Bournemouth came back from 2-0 down after 87 minutes to win at Goodison Park at the weekend [Michael Ball, 2 September].

Johnson wrote: “The early signs are not good at all and that is only on the field with Goodison Park life in limbo because of the ownership situation and speculation over Sean Dyche’s future before a ball was even kicked.

“Those rumours might have been well founded given this poor early form and years of just about keeping their heads above water — do not be surprised if we see our first managerial casualty this international break given how broken the players appear to be again.”

Farhad Moshiri to sack Everton boss before Aston Villa clash?

Football is increasingly a world of extremes and none more so than at Everton where the fanbase has seen their club fall from knocking on the door of the top flight elite to scrambling to stay in business.

Dyche was facing calls to go last season after his side went from 16 December to 6 April without winning a single Premier League game [i News, 17 April].

But a subsequent run of five wins in seven, including one in the Merseyside derby over Liverpool, lifted the gloom in a big way and saw relegation avoided with room to spare despite two points deductions.

More defeats to start the season amid an injury crisis aren’t sackable offences in themselves, but throwing away three points in the manner of the Cherries loss and then speaking after the game as if he was powerless to do anything about it has understandably turned the heat up hugely.

Everton Kevin Thelwell
Everton director of football Kevin Thelwell might not last long either.

The Farhad Moshiri of old would surely have taken notice of that but whether the majority shareholder has the financial wherewithal to sack anybody, or the appetite to rock the boat during the latest attempted takeover from John Textor is another matter.

Kevin Thelwell isn’t considered to have the authority to recommend a managerial change to the owner and has been tipped not to last long at Goodison Park himself as a result [The Esk, 1 September].

David Moyes, thanks to his emotional connection and availability, has been mentioned as a possible replacement [Richard Keys, 26 August] but West Ham fans were themselves unhappy with him last year for much the same reasons the Dyche is infuriating Evertonians.

So a sacking might just be possible but implementing improvement afterwards is easier said than done.

In other Everton news, a Sky Sports journalist has named who the Toffees could be set to sign still.
