David Edgar issues Dujon Sterling admission as James Tavernier edges closer to Rangers exit

Dujon Sterling is expected to be the first-choice right-back for Rangers next season with James Tavernier on the verge of leaving, according to David Edgar.

The Heart and Hand podcast host does not see another right-back coming in and doing the numbers the Englishman has over the past few seasons.

Other positions are also understood to be priority over a new right-back with Edgar urging the club to make solid attacking reinforcements.

He wrote on X on 18 July: “Sterling will play RB I think.

“Forget about any full-back doing those numbers. It won’t happen.

“Instead what we need to get is a side where the attacking players contribute their share rather than being utterly reliant on a defender.”

Rangers must not prioritise signing a James Tavernier replacement

Sterling stepping up as the first-choice right-back following James Tavernier’s potential departure, is a sensible approach as has shown promise and versatility, having played in various positions.

Focusing on attacking reinforcements rather than another right-back is crucial as the club have been heavily reliant on Tavernier’s attacking contributions from the right-back position.

By investing in quality attacking players, the team can diversify their goal-scoring sources, reducing the pressure on Sterling to replicate Tavernier’s numbers.

Signing a young right-back as Sterling’s understudy would provide depth and competition in the position.

This approach would ensure that Rangers have a succession plan in place while allowing the club to allocate more resources to strengthen the attack, which is a priority area for improvement.

Right now, they need to ensure they get the most money possible from the sale of Tavernier this summer.

In other Rangers news, a £3.5m-rated player linked with a move to Ibrox has recently gone on strike and appears set for a transfer.
