Rangers legend Barry Ferguson has voiced his frustration at the negativity currently surrounding the club.
In a recent opinion piece (19 July), the 46-year-old suggested that he understands why Philippe Clement’s struggles in the transfer market would frustrate some fans.
Despite many rumours, they have yet to make the kind of landmark signing that would inject real confidence into supporters.
“Some of my own mates have been on a downer ever since the way last season ended and their mood hasn’t improved much as the new campaign approaches. That they’re going to be locked out of their own stadium until at least September – and maybe even longer – hasn’t helped,” he said via Daily Record.
“But, come on. It’s starting to feel as if there’s no point in Clement and his players even turning up for that opener against Hearts because so many people appear to be writing off the campaign before it’s even begun. That’s the bit that’s really starting to annoy me.
“If I was a Rangers player right now I’d just be concentrating on getting ready to do my job, getting the sleeves rolled up for Tynecastle and getting out of there on opening day with three points in the bag.
“Strong performances and good results are what’s required to bring back some of the positivity that’s gone missing off over the last couple of months.”
Is Barry Ferguson right to defend Rangers?
If you want former players to defend your club, Ferguson is a good place to start. The Rangers legend enjoyed two incredible stints in Glasgow during his player career and in that time, he lifted the Scottish Premiership, Scottish Cup and Scottish League Cup five times each.
When you’ve had that much success, it can be easy to dismiss the new generation if they aren’t winning as much – but he’s opted against that strategy. After all, it wasn’t too long ago that the Ibrox faithful were celebrating a trip to the UEFA Europa League final.
Yes, they fell short in the Scottish Cup final as well as the Scottish Premiership last season, but rivals Celtic were just the better side and sometimes that happens at this level. Clement understands the passion of this fanbase and he knows how quickly things could turn. So, instead of throwing shots before a ball has been kicked, it may be better to sit back and watch how things play out as the Murrayfield friendly against Manchester United approaches.
In other Rangers news, Philippe Clement may have to look elsewhere in order to raise funds for new arrivals.
