Fabrizio Romano shares Tottenham January stance on goalkeeper transfer

Tottenham will not sign a new goalkeeper in the January transfer window, Fabrizio Romano says.

Fraser Forster has deputised in between the sticks in recent weeks, and despite some poor performances of late, Postecoglou has faith in the England international.

Romano recently revealed Guglielmo Vicario had undergone surgery on his ankle, but the Australian manager is happy with the 36-year-old as his backup, and the transfer expert has corroborated the 59-year-old’s belief in the former Southampton shot-stopper going into the second half of the season.

Speaking on Men In Blazers [24 December], the 31-year-old said: “I was also asking my sources the same question because I had the same doubt, but I’m told that Postecoglou’s being honest. I think they will not sign a goalkeeper in the January transfer window. That’s what I’m told.”

With Vicario out injured, it remains to be seen how long the Italian will be sidelined for.

Forster has been a loyal servant at the North London club, but Postecoglou can’t go into the coming months with the Englishman as his only choice.

The 36-year-old is nearing the end of his career, and it would be prudent for Spurs to find a replacement.

Tottenham can’t rely on the veteran goalkeeper without a stable defence, and the style of play isn’t suited to him either, which has been on show in the previous two matches against Manchester United and Liverpool.

Postecoglou has been unlucky with injuries, with Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven out, and Archie Gray has had to be deployed at centre-back.

The Australian has also been without Destiny Udogie and Ben Davies, which has made life even more difficult for Forster at the back.

While the goalkeeper has made mistakes, he hasn’t been helped by his backline, and all the Lilywhites faithful can do right now is trust the 36-year-old.

The North Londoners need a replacement for the Englishman sooner rather than later, and Daniel Levy needs to put his hands in his pockets in January to sign a new second-choice shot-stopper.
