David Edgar reacts to Souttar-Scotland news after Rangers man axed today

David Edgar has shared his immediate reaction after an update emerged surrounding Rangers defender John Souttar ahead of Euro 2024.

The defender had been included in Steve Clarke’s preliminary Scotland squad for this summer’s tournament but appears set to be cut from the final 26-man squad having struggled with injury in recent weeks [Scottish Sun, 6 June].

Souttar missed the last three games of the Gers’ domestic season so he was always up against the clock to be fit in time to make the trip to Germany, but host of the Heart and Hand Podcast Edgar has shared his sympathy.

Writing on X on Thursday (6 June) he said: “Fitness thing with Souttar. Real shame for him.”

Will Rangers defender John Souttar play for Scotland at Euro 2024?

Every Rangers fan would have hoped to have seen Souttar in a Tartan Army shirt this summer in Germany, but with his injury issues towards the back end of the season, he was always going to struggle to make the cut.

It does mean that none of Clarke’s squad heading into this summer’s tournament will be Rangers players with the only real relation being Ryan Jack who has only just departed Ibrox after the Gers decided not to renew his contract.

While it will be gutting for Souttar to miss out on a major tournament, it could well be a blessing in disguise for the Gers as it allows their only consistent centre-back at this moment in time plenty of time to recover.

With speculation still swirling around both Connor Goldson and Ben Davies’ futures in Glasgow, Philippe Clement is going to need the Scotsman fit and available because he could be playing a lot of football next season.

Hopefully, Souttar will bounce back quickly and be ready to start the season strongly with the Gers.

In other Rangers news, Clement has been tipped to “manoeuvre” Todd Cantwell out of Ibrox during the summer transfer window
