Rangers have been told to create a “programmed playlist” to help boost the atmosphere ahead of their matches at Hampden Park.

TalkSPORT presenter David Tanner posted a video on X (13 August) of the Gers’ temporary home filling up before their Champions League qualifier against Dynamo Kyiv, with the atmosphere a subdued one.

Tanner encouraged the club to take a leaf out of Celtic’s book by playing songs more closely associated with the club to get fans in the mood.

He said: “Random observation – Rangers need a programmed playlist that has a positive impact on the atmosphere, especially if fans don’t fancy Hampden.

“There was silence pre-match, when ‘Penny Arcade’ once had Ibrox bouncing. Compare the video to the playlists that have Celtic & Scotland games rocking.”

Rangers must do more to make Hampden Park feel like home

The bombshell news that Philippe Clement’s side would be forced to begin their home matches on the road this season took many by surprise, albeit the relocation to Hampden was a sensible compromise.

A cross-country move to Edinburgh’s Murrayfield Stadium for home games would certainly not have been a universally popular move, for fans of a club with roots so entrenched in the city of Glasgow.

However, despite the Rangers-ification of the national stadium for the Bears’ home matches against Motherwell and Dynamo Kyiv so far, it’s still lacking in the bearpit-like atmosphere Ibrox thrives on.

Following the lead of others to make the most of Hampden – from pre-match through to post-match –could be key to ramping up the atmosphere to the point that the players can’t tell the difference.

With chairman John Bennett saying that a return to Ibrox by September is ‘an aspiration’ [Rangers TV, 29 July], Clement’s side must make the most of their temporary home – and singing along to unofficial club anthems would be a positive start.

In other Rangers news, Jim White wondered what the Gers need to do to prevent Celtic from winning another Premiership title.
