'Disgraceful' - Jeff Stelling explodes live on air after what he saw watching Rangers

Jeff Stelling did not mince his words when reacting to Jefte’s red card as Rangers lost 2-0 to Dynamo Kyiv on Tuesday (13 August).

The Brazilian had already received a controversial caution earlier in the match when another innocuous challenge after winning a header was punished by referee Marco Guida.

Philippe Clement’s men would eventually go on to concede twice in the closing stages, attempting to battle away with 10 men, with Stelling blasting the referee for the decision in a key Champions League qualifier.

Speaking live via talkSPORT on Wednesday (14 August, 6:13am), he said: “It’s a financial disaster for Rangers, more than anything else. But was the red card a little dubious?”

Andy Townsend replied: “I’ve seen it for the first time this morning and I can fully understand why Clement believes that is the worst decision he’s seen in 30 years. I don’t remember seeing anything as ridiculous, as ludicrous as that.

“I think it’s absolutely outrageous. I saw his first yellow, which was a nudge, but one of those ones that you just have to live with. The second is just preposterous – it’s a joke decision. You can see why the Rangers fans would be seething.”

In a closing statement, Stelling simply said: “It’s disgraceful. No qualified referee should be making a decision like that.”

Rangers knocked out of Champions League by refereeing mistake

While being knocked out of one of the biggest competitions in football already has quite a big blow attached, the Gers will continue to feel the secondary financial blow.

Although nobody can predict what would have happened in the last 40 minutes of the match should Jefte have stayed on the pitch, the Gers would have had a much better chance of progressing.

The fans at Hampden Park have every right to be angry with the decision by a Champions League-level referee, with Derek Ferguson even calling him out for “cheating” after watching the red card decision.

Rangers will have to settle for the Europa League now, and the financial gain from that competition is massively different from the Champions League, with Clement already stating that the squad’s rebuild cannot be completed over the coming weeks.

While some fans will argue that the Gers had enough quality and talent to easily claim the victory, having nearly lost the first leg 1-0, the team will feel cheated, and it is totally understandable to see why.

In other Rangers news, Chris Sutton reacted to the controversy as the Light Blues were knocked out of the Champions League.
