Leon Osman was left aghast by the “outstanding” defensive work that Tosin Adarabioyo put in for Chelsea in their Premier League clash against Everton on Sunday.
Everton were driving forward on the counter-attack as Orel Mangala set Jesper Lindstrom up for a cross which was spilt into Iliman Ndiaye’s path but was eventually denied by an impressive block from the former Fulham defender.
The game ended 0-0 as both teams left Goodison Park with a point to their name.
Ndiaye was the star of the show for the Toffees but on the opposing team, it was the performance of Adarabioyo who stood out for Everton legend Osman.
“That was an outstanding piece of defending [From Tosin Adarabioyo,” he said. “It was good play from Everton, Beto and [Levi] Colwill involved in a tangle, referee says play on and from that moment, Everton have an advantage,” he said live on USA Network (22 December, 15:35pm).
“[Jesper] Lindstrom does well with his first touch and he plays it across and Everton are just desperate for it to fall to somebody.
“They thought it had, they thought it would have fallen to Ndiaye, comfortably able to into the back of the goal but what a reaction from Tosin.”
Everton and Sean Dyche will be happy with a draw against Chelsea
Going into the game against Chelsea on 22 December, most expected Everton to be demolished by Enzo Maresca’s men with the recent form they’ve found themselves in.
Instead, the Toffees did the red half of Merseyside a favour and kept the Blues from earning all three points thanks to their solid defensive performance.
There were times throughout the game when Everton could have nicked all three points themselves but their attacking line wasn’t up to the challenge of beating the Blues’ defence.
Dyche did try to change things up somewhat by bringing on Beto for Dominic Calvert-Lewin in the second half but aside from Ndiaye, none of the performances that the Toffees’ attackers put in were really worth writing home about.
Only time will tell if Everton will retain their Premier League status but if they keep grinding out draws against the likes of Chelsea and Arsenal, they could be in for a decent chance of doing so.
In other Everton news, Merseyside police sent a message out to both sets of supporters prior to the Chelsea clash.
