Frank Lampard was at the centre of early chants from the away end as Everton and Chelsea drew 0-0 at Goodison Park on Sunday, Chris Beesley shared.
Writing in the Liverpool Echo’s match live blog (22 Decmember, 2:11pm), Beesley heard the visiting fans chanting “Super Frank Lampard” in a homage to their all-time top-scorer and former manager.
Lampard’s two spells in charge of Chelsea, the second as interim coach, came either side of his year-long spell at Goodison Park, being sacked on 23 January 2023 before Dyche stepped in to replace him.
Beesley said: “The away fans now launch into a chant about their former player and Sean Dyche’s predecessor as Everton manager, ‘Super’ Frank Lampard.”
Everton and Chelsea fans have differing views on Frank Lampard
You’d be hard-pressed to find a Toffees fan who would have joined in on singing “Super Frank Lampard” during their goalless stalemate on Saturday – rarely heard at Goodison during his time at the helm.
Lampard’s playing career at Chelsea will make him a legend of the club regardless of how his managerial appointments pan out, but the 46-year-old had no such status to fall back on while on Merseyside.
A win percentage of just 27 per cent in his near-year in charge translated to just 12 victories in 44 games, and while Lampard kept the Blues up in 2021/22, he had them staring down the barrel 12 months later.
Dyche being brought in as the former England midfielder’s replacement has proven to be a shrewd appointment in terms of keeping the Toffees up, doing so twice despite points deductions last season.
While Dyche likely won’t be remembered as an Evertonian legend once he does head for pastures new, new owner Dan Friedkin certainly has more to thank the 53-year-old for than he does Lampard.
In other Everton news, Jamie Carragher has spotted a worrying trend with the club’s new signings since Sean Dyche’s arrival.
