Portsmouth have won the race to sign Barnsley defender Jordan Williams on a free transfer, sources have told Football Insider.

Williams, 24, is a free agent after seeing out his contract at Barnsley.

A number of clubs, including West Brom and Cardiff City, have been chasing Williams, but Championship new boys Portsmouth have agreed a deal to bring him to Fratton Park.

Barnsley announced last month that the defender would be departing Oakwell at the end of his deal, and Pompey have now moved quickly to secure his signature.

He captained the Tykes in the 2023-24 campaign – a season which ultimately ended in a 6-3 aggregate loss against Bolton in the League One play-off semi-final.

Williams made 52 appearances across all competitions last term, with 50 of those outings coming as part of the starting lineup.

The Huddersfield academy product joined Barnsley in 2018 and has gone on to make 201 appearances for the Yorkshire outfit.

He has amassed experience in both League One and the Championship while at Oakwell.

Williams primarily plays both as a centre-back and right-back and joins Portsmouth following their promotion to the second tier as champions.

John Mousinho’s side will play Championship football next season for the first time in 12 years.

Despite winning League One, Pompey have confirmed the likes of Sean Raggett, Joe Rafferty, Lee Evans, Josh Martin, Matt Macey won’t be offered new deals.

Tino Anjorin, Abu Kamara, Myles Peart-Harris and Alex Robertson have also returned to their parent clubs following the end of their loans at Fratton Park.
