Everton have limited funds in the transfer market but will be aided by Aston Villa in their push to sign Tim Iroegbunam, the Liverpool Echo reports.

According to the outlet’s website on 18 June the openness of the Villans to sell the young midfielder this summer means there is a deal to be done for the Toffees, despite pressure on their spending during the window, especially prior to the 30 June cut off for the current accounting period.

The Athletic reported earlier the same day that Everton are in advanced talks for the 20-year-old as they gear up for the possible departure of Amadou Onana.

According to the Echo Villa are willing to sell Iroegbunam as they are looking to add to their midfield this summer, meaning opportunities for the youngster will be limited under Unai Emery, and as a “young player with talent to develop” he is seen as fitting Kevin Thelwell’s profile for targets as part of the long-term strategy at Goodison Park.

Everton looking to sell Amadou Onana

Aston Villa themselves have emerged alongside Bayern Munich [Times, 14 June] and Arsenal as clubs who have already made enquiries on Merseyside over a deal for Onana [Echo, 14 June].

That line of communication may be what turned Everton onto Iroegbunam, and developments towards bringing the England Under-20 international might suggest an Onana exit is advancing.

The Belgian has been linked to a move virtually every window since he signed from Lille two years ago, and has recently been vocal about his intention to take his next step this summer.

Having not always been included in Sean Dyche’s starting line up down the stretch last season he would be a more palatable sacrifice than star defender Jarrad Branthwaite, and the Toffees seemingly believe they’ve found a replacement at a fraction of the price.

Since Iroegbunam has only got 12 Premier League appearances to his name it would represent a downgrade at this stage, so Thelwell and Dyche will have to hope he can develop into a potential regular moving forward like James Garner has.

There had been fears that Everton would be vulnerable to any transfer offers this summer, but it appears that cost cutting measures behind the scenes [BBC, 3 June] and the departure of players like Andre Gomes has helped keep matters in their own hands.

An Onana sale would be a necessary evil after a pair of spending breaches were punished with points deductions last season, while a new signing this early in the window would be something of a bonus in the context of recent windows.

In other Everton news, a Premier League rival has reacted to the Toffees’ transfer behaviour to follow suit.
