Kasper Hjulmand is the current head coach of the Denmark national side. Under his guidance, Denmark reached the semifinals of Euro 2020, and qualified Denmark for the 2022 World Cup and Euro 2024.

Before his management days, he had a fine career as a footballer himself. He spent most of his time in the Danish leagues, with four years at Randers Freja, then off to Herlev IF and retiring at B. 93.

His managerial career began in 1998, at Lyngby U18s. He spent 10 years here, progressing up to coaching the first-team squad. Then in 2011, he had a three year stint at Nordsjaelland, before moving to the Bundesliga with Mainz 05 for a season, which didnt go as planned. He was sacked.

Hjumland then returned to his beloved Nordsjaelland, where he spent a further three years. However, at the end of his contract, he was let go. Ultimately, he fell on his feet. The national side came knocking – where he has remained ever since.

Simon Kjaer, currently of AC Milan is Denmark captain, and some captain he is. On the 12th of June 2021, while playing their opening match against Finland, Christian Eriksen collapsed on the pitch.

Kjær was the first to help him and summon the medical team to quickly get onto the pitch – arguably saving his life in an act of heroic bravery. He embodies a true captain.

Denmark’s greatest ever players

The Dane’s have had some phenomoanl talent to grace the national side. Legendary goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel is one of the greatest shot-stoppers in the history of the sport, who was an integral part of Manchester United’s success in the 1990s, including the 1999 Treble.

Then, who could forget the iconic Laudrup brothers – Michael and Brian. Michael Laudrup played a key role in the Barcelona “Dream Team” under Johan Cruyff, whereas Brian Laudrup was a key player in Denmark’s Euro 1992 winning squad, and had successful spells at Rangers and other European clubs.

Allan Simonsen may be regarded the greatest ever – he remains the first and only Danish player to win the Ballon d’Or in 1977. Other notable names include Preben Elkjær, Morten Olsen, Henrik Larsen and Eriksen.
