Rangers loanee Jose Cifuentes has been criticised for his performance for Ecuador in a 3-1 friendly against Bolivia overnight.

The midfielder is currently out on loan from Ibrox with Cruzeiro where he will stay until January but is still featuring for his national side.

Cifuentes started and featured across 63 minutes in the win but has still received some criticism for his performance on the night (13 June).

Ecuadorian outlet Primicias has questioned why he started the game and has suggested that he found it difficult.

They said: “When Bolivia went up in the second half, it was difficult for them to cover their backs. He is another one who did not deserve to be a starter in the Cup in this match.”

This has been echoed by journalist Carlos Xavier Arguello, via X (13 June), who said he “did not appear” such was the anonymity of his performance.

The 25-year-old joined the Gers from Los Angeles FC in 2023 and has only gone on to make 20 appearances for the club.

He has since joined Cruzeiro on loan but there is potential that he could return in January to add to Philippe Clement’s squad.

Cifuentes did not feature for Ecuador in their opening friendly against Argentina on Monday (10 June) but came in from the start against Bolivia.

He managed just 36 touches across his 63-minute cameo and he managed to make 24 passes with an 89 per cent accuracy [FotMob] which is a positive.

The midfielder was let down by his defensive work which saw him fail to win a tackle while losing out in two duels.

Jose Cifuentes was sent off at the end of a crazy first half against Dundee back in December.

It is clear that the Ecuadorian media weren’t pleased by his performance which may see him struggle for minutes in the upcoming Copa America.

The Rangers loanee could feature at the tournament and boost his profile ahead of a potential Ibrox return in winter.

In other Rangers news, Philippe Clement must look at transfer priority as Yusuf Kabadayi fee agreed at Ibrox.
