Blackburn Rovers manager John Eustace has confirmed Rangers winger Rabbi Matondo is on the club’s transfer shortlist ahead of the 30 August deadline.
Matondo has been identified as a solution for Rovers’ left-wing problem, alongside Jubilo Iwata forward Ryo Germain.
Eustace was asked about the speculation regarding both players at a press conference on Thursday (22 August), as quoted by the Lancashire Telegraph [22 August].
“I think they are on the list along with 60 other players that the recruitment team have been looking at. They are, yes,” Eustace said.
“There is nothing imminent. I wouldn’t expect anything before the weekend.”
Rangers have set the asking price at £2million for Matondo to leave the club this summer [Football Scotland], having also previously been linked with a move to another EFL side in Leeds United.
Will Rangers sell Rabbi Matondo to Blackburn Rovers?
It only seems a matter of time before the 23-year-old leaves the Gers after being linked with a move away all summer.
Matondo started the 2-0 win against St Johnstone in the Scottish League Cup on Saturday [17 August] and assisted Cyrriel Dessers’ goal in what could be his final appearance for the club.
Ross McCausland and Vaclav Cerny have emerged as Clement’s preferred options on the wings. Matondo has been resigned to three substitute appearances this season and is at the back of the pecking order behind exit-linked Scott Wright [Chris Jack].
The Welsh international was used fairly regularly under Clement last term, but a return of six goals and four assists in 31 appearances is nowhere near the standard needed to challenge Celtic at the top of the Scottish Premiership.
He has unfortunately failed to live up to his promise since his move from Schalke in 2022 and needs to use this opportunity to leave Glasgow and kick-start his career.
Matondo will be remembered for his goal in the Old Firm that helped the Light Blues rescue a 3-3 draw last season, but it’s time to bring his Rangers career to an end and Clement can reinvest the money from his sale back into the side.
