Rangers were dragged into a rant about Neil Lennon by Romania legend Eugen Neagoe, following the ex-Celtic manager’s sacking by Rapid Bucharest.
Former Dinamo Bucharest manager Neagoe took aim at both Lennon and the Gers over the former’s success at Celtic Park, saying “Rangers didn’t exist” during his two spells at Parkhead.
Of the 10 trophies Lennon won during his time in the Celtic dugout, three came during the Gers’ time in the lower leagues between 2012 and 2017, adding five more before the title returned to Ibrox in 2021.
In quotes reported by the Daily Record (22 August), Neagoe said: “I predicted Lennon wouldn’t last four games because he knows nothing about Romanian football. He actually managed for six.
“Look, hats off to him for the trophies he won in his career, but remember he won them when Rangers didn’t exist. Celtic were playing alone in the Scottish league.”
Rangers must prove doubters wrong after Neil Lennon jibe
While not falling into the obscurity of Scotland’s lower divisions this summer, many a pundit have already given a verdict that once again, the Gers “won’t exist” in the new season’s Premiership title race.
The likes of Keith Jackson have predicted Celtic to “romp” to the league title at the Light Blues’ expense following a summer of mixed upheaval at Ibrox [Daily Record, 29 July], with a squad overhaul having ground to a halt.
Philippe Clement’s side have seen nine new faces come through the doors at Auchenhowie with a further nine heading the other way, with Robin Propper the most recent arrival at the start of August.
Following his brief, six-match tenure in Romania, Lennon is another who’ll believe Celtic are better-placed than Clement’s team to win the title, discussing the gap between the duo late last season [PLZ Soccer Show, 24 May].
With several big names backing them to be outmatched on all fronts by their Old Firm rivals, the onus is on the Gers to prove the doubters wrong, and showcase to all onlookers that when it comes to the title race, they very much “exist”.
In other Rangers news, the Gers have been given the green light to seal a £2.5million transfer at a discounted price.
