Liverpool are yet to add to their squad this summer, but in terms of outgoings, the Reds have been busy in recent weeks.
Fabio Carvalho joined Brentford in a deal worth £27.5m including add-ons earlier this week, with the Reds also entitled to 17.5% of the proceeds from any future sale.
Young midfielder Bobby Clark is on his way out of the club as he looks set to reunite with former Liverpool assistant coach Pep Lijnders at RB Salzburg.
And, as Arne Slot looks to offload fringe players and fine-tune his squad, it looks as if Sepp van den Berg could be the next player out of the door at Anfield.
Romano confirms Liverpool will net £25m from Sepp van den Berg’s sale
The Dutchman featured heavily in pre-season under Slot and made quite the impression. However, Liverpool decided that they wouldn’t stand in Van den Berg’s way if their £20m valuation was met.
In recent weeks, the young defender has emerged as a bit of a wanted man, with Bayer Leverkusen and Brentford willing to snap him up before the transfer deadline.
Fabrizio Romano has provided the latest update on Van den Berg’s future, suggesting that teams are willing to pay well over his asking price to complete the transfer.
Romano said on his YouTube channel: “Sepp van den Berg is set to leave the club. The final package will be even more than what they expected.
“They wanted £20m but had several proposals, so they’ll make £25m. Bayer Leverkusen and Brentford are pushing, let’s see where he goes.”
Leaving Liverpool is the right move for Van den Berg
Van Den Berg was hailed as an ‘incredible’ player by former Preston North End teammate Gregg Cunningham during his loan spell at the club and has developed admirably over the last couple of seasons.
However, with Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, Jarell Quansah and Joe Gomez ahead of him in the pecking order, he is unlikely to get game time at Liverpool unless they face an injury crisis.
From Liverpool’s standpoint, a £25m fee for a player who is their fifth-choice central defender at best is a deal they can’t refuse.
The Reds are set to make a hefty profit on a player they signed for £4.4m including add-ons in 2019 and Van den Berg is likely to get regular game time at Brentford or Leverkusen, making his departure the right solution for everyone involved.
