Everton have space left in their Premier League squad to add free agent signings if they choose to, The Athletic reports.
According to the outlet’s website on 14 September, the deadline for top flight clubs to submit their registrations, there is room to add since the likes of Youssef Chermiti, Roman Dixon and Harrison Armstrong are classed as youth and don’t count towards the limit.
Dele Alli is still without a club as he continues his “long rehabilitation” from a groin problem after his Toffees contract expired in the summer, and clarification on a re-signing is yet to arrive.
Sky Sports’ Alan Myers (2 September) named the midfielder as the only likely addition past the close of the transfer window.
Sean Dyche could get late Everton signing after Tottenham talks
The intention must be to add Dele to the squad otherwise the club wouldn’t have bothered to renegotiate their original deal with Tottenham in order to make it financially viable [Nizaar Kinsella, 14 July].
So unless there has been some sort of major red flag during his recovery it wouldn’t be a shock to see the ex-England star rejoin.
Sean Dyche is thought to have an eye on helping the 28-year-old stage a “spectacular revival” at Everton [Liverpool Echo, 12 July], and after a fourth loss to kick of the Premier League campaign he could do with help from anywhere it’s available.
However, since the Toffees boss has shown a reluctance to throw new signings such as Jake O’Brien and Jesper Lindstrom into the starting line up he is bound to be even more hesitant if and when Dele is available to choose from.
While Dyche is in charge it seems probably that Dele will come into play at some point, but he’s unlikely to be a factor for some time either way.
But with the manager’s job being called into question thanks to poor results, and potentially in line to be replaced either way if John Textor completes a takeover [TBR Football, 13 September], a change in the dugout might see the signing viewed differently.
In other Everton news, Dyche has his eye on signing a Newcastle ace who could now be available.
