Jordan Pickford is under “massive pressure” at Everton and could lose his place within weeks, according to Alan Nixon.
Reporting via his Patreon on 15 September the journalist said that both Asmir Begovic and Joao Virginia will get chances to impress in Carabao Cup and stake a claim to take the number one spot in the Premier League.
Sean Dyche is said to be “in the mood for a change”, and is looking at Newcastle’s Nick Pope as the long-term replacement if his unhappiness with Pickford’s form continues.
But the England starter’s place is under threat long before that as Dyche is “looking to shake him up” after returning from Euro 2024.
Joao Virginia and Asmir Begovic set for Everton opportunities
The Toffees face Southampton in the Carabao Cup third round next up (17 September) so Pickford looks set to miss out immediately for one of his back-ups.
He was in goal for the 3-0 win over Doncaster in the previous round for his only clean sheet of the campaign so far, and the only game not lost.
It’s probably fair to say Pickford hasn’t been at his best so far this term, and that may have something to do with returning late after reaching the Euros final with England in the summer.
But it would be a pretty drastic move for Dyche to drop one of his few star players, and one who has been a huge reason that Everton are still in the Premier League after the past few seasons.
Nobody should be untouchable when the season has started so disastrously but it is unlikely to do anything for the manager’s own job security to bomb Pickford out when he has stuck with the likes of Ashley Young and Michael Keane.
Begovic and Virginia are capable keepers but few would give Everton a better chance with them in goal instead of the current number one.
Dyche could be faced with losing his own job if results don’t improve within a month [TBR Football, 13 September] so needs to make changes somewhere.
But surely seeing more of Jake O’Brien or Jesper Lindstrom should come before Begovic or Virginia.
In other Everton news, John Textor’s attempt to buy another English club after linking himself to the Toffees has emerged.
