Martin Braithwaite is expected to seek reimbursement for the release clause he personally triggered if signed by Everton, according to Caught Offside.
The outlet reported via their website on 15 July that after the Dane terminated his Espanyol contract [Tipsbladet, 15 July] by activating his €600,000 release [£504,000] he will look to get that money back from wherever he signs next.
That would apply to the Toffees who are interesting in the 33-year-old as well as Premier League transfer rivals Leicester City and Southampton.
Everton could sign Dominic Calvert-Lewin replacement for tiny fee
Braithwaite may be able to afford the fee even more than most top level players thanks to his off-pitch endeavours [MARCA] but in practical terms it would be no surprise for him to expect reimbursement in this instance.
Players in Spain often trigger their own release clause personally albeit usually after the club that wants to sign them provides the money up front.
And even in light of the fact that the Toffees finances are probably still not as healthy as Branthwaite’s own it is a very affordable price if Sean Dyche and Kevin Thelwell want to land the man who scored 22 times last season to secure Espanyol’s promotion back to La Liga.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s contract status means he will likely need to leave this summer and with talkSPORT reporting on 16 July that Everton want £40million to sell it would be a small price to pay to sign Braithwaite up for so little as part of the replacement plan.
He may be past his best but has shown enough to have a trio of Premier League sides interested and as a short-term option to help bridge the gap as the likes of Chelsea’s Armando Broja gets up to speed he might be a solid signing.
In other Everton news, a “due diligence issue” caused by chaos at 777 Partners could prove to be a problem for Dan Friedkin.
