Everton have made an approach to Peterborough to sign highly-rated defender Ronnie Edwards this summer, according to The Boot Room.

Writing on their website (25 June), the news outlet report that the League One side are now ready to cash in on their star man after months of speculation linking him with a move to the Premier League.

And the Toffees have made their move to bring the 21-year-old in, but face competition from Newcastle United, Brighton and Southampton for his signature too.

Everton aiming to replace Jarrad Branthwaite before a sale?

The centre-back situation at Everton at the moment is a bit all over the place, with the only player seemingly sure of still being at the club once the season starts being James Tarkowski.

Jarrad Branthwaite has been subject of a bid from Manchester United, which was rejected, but they are preparing a second bid [Daily Mail, 22 June]. Michael Keane and Ben Godfrey are allowed to leave if the offer is right as they enter the final 12 months of their deal, and Mason Holgate has no future at Goodison Park.

With so much uncertainty around the position, it makes sense that the club would be targeting new faces at the back and Edwards fits the bill as captain of the England Under-19’s side.

Ronnie Edwards
Everton want to sign Peterborough star Ronnie Edwards.

A dominant defender who is very capable on the ball, Edwards has previously been dubbed “gifted” and with Peterborough now open to a sale it should be an easy deal to do.

After watching how Branthwaite has developed under Sean Dyche too it will surely appeal to Edwards to turn down the interest from elsewhere and move to Merseyside, so this is an interesting deal to keep an eye on.

In other Everton news, two Premier League clubs have made a move for Calvert-Lewin after Newcastle’s move collapsed.
