Everton have confirmed Seamus Coleman has been forced to withdraw from the Republic of Ireland squad.
The 36-year-old was due to represent his nation in the upcoming UEFA Nations League fixtures against Finland and England but has been ruled out through injury.
Coleman has featured only once for the Blues this season, coming in the 3-2 loss against Bournemouth, and was expected to make his long-awaited return to the side after the international break.
However, after Everton confirmed the latest injury setback via X [11 November], the captain could be set for another extended spell on the sidelines with a hamstring issue.
Everton also announced that Coleman’s club colleague Jake O’Brien has been called up to the senior Ireland squad.
Seamus Coleman suffers another injury setback at Everton
Everton supporters will now start to become worried about whether they will ever see their captain on the pitch again as he suffers another setback in his recurring injury concerns.
Coleman has sustained a long-term injury more often than not throughout his years at Goodison Park and, as he approaches his forties, his time left on the pitch is limited enough.
Sean Dyche has not been able to field his strongest defensive unit all season, and this has been a major problem for the Toffees as they now find themselves back in a relegation battle after the 0-0 draw against West Ham United on Saturday [9 November].
The Blues conceded just 51 goals in the Premier League last term – only Manchester City, Liverpool and Arsenal conceded fewer.
While Nathan Patterson has returned after recovering from his own injury woes, question marks remain on whether he is capable of becoming a success in the Premier League – he will need to make a “big impression” at Goodison Park this year to win around Dyche.
Ashley Young, on the other hand, has been an inconsistent performer at full-back and the 39-year-old will surely call time on his playing career at the end of the current campaign or year after and is not a long-term solution for the Blues.
Coleman’s long-awaited return will spark joy in the supporters after a turbulent season, but whether he will remain the same player of old, after so many setbacks, will remain to be seen.
