'Could have brilliant' - Journo shares Farhad Moshiri's 'Biggest mistake' at Everton

Dominic King believes Farhad Moshiri’s decision to sack Marco Silva as manager in 2019 was his “biggest mistake” at Everton.

The current manager was in charge at Goodison Park for just 18 months before being replaced by Carlo Ancelotti in December 2019, recording a 40 per cent win rate during his time on Merseyside.

Moshiri, who is set to be replaced by Dan Friedkin as the Toffees’ owner, is a figure who splits opinion at Goodison Park, and now sacking Silva has been named as his biggest mistake.

Speaking via the It’s All Kicking Off podcast [11 November], Mail Sport journalist King said: “I think getting rid of Marco Silva will go down as Everton’s biggest mistake under Farhad Moshiri because they were never going down that season.

“He just got himself into a situation, which has happened to too many managers at Everton over the past few years. It was a sequence of seven or eight defeats in a short period of time.

“If they’d had just stuck with him and backed him, he could have been brilliant for Everton. Unfortunately, they ended up going for Carlo Ancelotti.”

Everton regret sacking Marco Silva in 2019?

Looking at Silva’s rise since leaving Goodison Park, many fans will certainly agree that sacking the Portuguese from his managerial role in 2019 was a major mistake.

However, considering the manager’s win rate during his time on Merseyside, Moshiri will feel he made the right decision for the Toffees at the time, though the team did eventually finish twelfth in the Premier League.

The Toffees have since had Ancelotti, Rafael Benitez, Frank Lampard and now Sean Dyche in permanent roles, with fans really only frustrated with their team’s performances over those seasons.

It is impossible to say whether Silva could have turned things around but he is certainly in a better position at Fulham now than Dyche is at Goodison Park.

The Cottagers are just one point off the top-four spots in the Premier League, claiming 18 points from their first 11 matches of the season while the Toffees are stranded three points above the relegation zone.

It seems unfair to hold Moshiri accountable for a decision that looks silly in hindsight, but considering the number of frustrating choices he has made over the years, it is just another one to add to the pile.

In other Everton news, Sean Dyche has shared if a Toffees duo will feature in a behind-closed-doors friendly during the international break.
