Everton defender Ashley Young has backed Sean Dyche to “be in the hat” to succeed Gareth Southgate as England manager.

Southgate announced on Tuesday (16 July) following the Three Lions’ disappointing Euro 2024 final defeat to Spain that he would be standing down as England boss after eight years in charge.

Eddie Howe and Graham Potter are understood to be the early contenders to take over the role [Sky Sports, 16 July], but Toffees veteran Young believes Dyche has done enough to be considered for the position.

As quoted by BBC Sport on Tuesday (16 July) Young said: “I don’t think even when Gareth Southgate got the job, he [Dyche] was considered to be England manager.

“Who can say the gaffer shouldn’t be considered because you don’t know until someone is given that role?

“You have had previous managers like Steve McClaren, Fabio Capello, Roy Hodgson who have come in with a longer career in the game, with more success but have not been able to get the England team to, where I feel, an England team should have been.

“There will be names thrown in the hat left, right and centre and for the job the manager has done, of course, his name should be in the hat.”

Will Sean Dyche exit Everton after Gareth Southgate and England announcement?

Everton supporters won’t want to lose Dyche given his impressive work since taking over at Goodison Park, but they will most likely agree that the former Burnley boss deserves to be in the hat as Southgate’s successor.

His record throughout his career has been impressive as he has repeatedly helped teams finish beyond their means, whether that be during his time at Turf Moor or over the last couple of seasons on Merseyside.

The only possible caveat to that is that his style of football is incredibly different to what the other coaches linked with the role would bring. Not every England supporter would be pleased to see his direct approach.

Until an appointment is made, pundits and players will continue to link the Everton boss with the position. Hopefully, the FA will look elsewhere as it would be a massive shame for the Toffees if they lost their manager so close to the start of the season.
