Leanne Crichton was stunned by “the strangest” moment during Rangers’ 2-1 victory against Motherwell on Saturday (10 August).
Cyriel Dessers opened his goalscoring account for the new Scottish Premiership campaign, firing home after just 13 minutes and sending the Hampden Park crowd wild.
However, before Vaclav Cerny could score his curling beauty from outside the box, which would eventually be the winning goal, the Gers were punished by an unfortunate own goal by Robin Propper.
Speaking live via Sportsound on Saturday (10 August, 3:18pm), Leanne Crichton said: “You’re right, it’s come from absolutely nowhere. I don’t think anyone in this stadium can quite believe it, even the Motherwell fans can’t.
“It’s the first time in the game that [Steve] Seddon and [Ewan] Wilson have managed to get into a higher position. The delivery into the box is OK.
“The slight deflection takes into the path of Robin Propper who fails to adjust and wrong-foots Jack Butland. It’s the strangest goal you’ll see in a game where Rangers have had so much control.”
Robin Propper unlucky moment in Rangers debut v Motherwell
Having not made it off the bench against Dynamo Kyiv during the week, Propper would have been desperate to get onto the pitch and show the fans why Philippe Clement wanted him.
His debut against the Steelmen probably could have gone a little better, however, having scored an own goal and received a yellow card before being substituted after 73 minutes.
There is no doubt that the 30-year-old is a talented defender, even proving it during the clash at Hampden Park, but those highlights will do him no favours until he settles into life in Scotland.
Fans will most likely put it down to a freak moment, but if the Gers are to lift the Scottish Premiership title over Old Firm rivals Celtic this season, they must clamp down on mistakes like this.
Following Connor Goldson’s exit to Aris Limassol, Clement has been left with four choices at centre-back: Propper, Ben Davies, John Souttar and Leon Balogun.
He will be hoping the latter of those choices is to play a bit-part role for the Gers this season, especially if Propper can turn things around and establish himself in the starting XI, putting this awful moment behind him.
